ਜਗਤ ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਹਮ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
In fear we are born, and in fear we die. Fear is always present in the mind.
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮੁਬਾਰਕ ਹੈ (ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਹਮ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਤੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਏ ਤਦੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੇ ਖੁੱਸਣ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ।੧।
O Nanak, if one dies in the fear of God, his coming into the world is blessed and approved. ||1||
(ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ-ਭਰਿਆ ਇੱਕ ਐਸਾ ਸਮੰੁਦਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਡਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ।
Without the Fear of God, no one crosses over the world-ocean.
(ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ)-ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ) ਸੰਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
This Fear of God adorns the Love of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨ-ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨੂੰ) ਪਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦੀ (ਪਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨ-ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਕਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ) ਮਨ ਸਾਫ਼-ਸੁਥਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ।
Without fear, the cloth is not dyed, and the mind is not rendered pure.
ਇਸ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤੇ ਭੀ ਜਾਣ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਝੂਠ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ।੪।
Without fear, the performance of rituals is false, and one finds no place of rest. ||4||
ਹਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ।
In the Fear of God, the wind and breezes ever blow.
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਭੀ ਭੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਵਗ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ।
In the Fear of God, thousands of rivers flow.
ਜੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਆ ਵੱਸੇ, ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਕੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਭੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
By the Fear of God, filth is washed off, and the body becomes immaculately pure.
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਤਿ ਉੱਜਲੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
The soul is enlightened, and the intellect is exalted, meditating on the Lord, the ocean of excellence.
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਾ ਜੋੜਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Through the Fear of God, the Fearless Lord is obtained, and one's light merges in the Infinite Light.
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰੇ ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
O Nanak, that bride alone is good, who is pleasing to her Lord and Master, and whom the Creator Lord Himself forgives. ||1||
ਹੇ ਸ਼ੇਖ਼! ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਠ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ, ਇਹ ਝੱਲ-ਪੁਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਆ)
O Shaykh, abandon your cruel nature; live in the Fear of God and give up your madness.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਕੇ ਕਈ ਏਸ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ ।
Through the Fear of the Guru, many have been saved; in this fear, find the Fearless Lord.
(ਜਗਤ ਦਾ) ਸਾਰਾ ਆਕਾਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ) ਡਰ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੈ
The entire universe is in fear; only the Dear Lord is fearless.
ਇਕ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ) ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ ।
Serving the True Guru, the Lord comes to dwell in the mind, and then, fear cannot stay there.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ (ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ);
Without the Fear of God, there is no devotional worship, and no love for the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਇਹ ਡਰ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲੇ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਡਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ) ਰੰਗ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Meeting with the True Guru, the Fear of God wells up, and one is embellished with the Fear and the Love of God.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਡਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ) ਨਿਰਮਲ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਠੰਡ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
From the Fear of God, devotion wells up, and deep within, there is peace.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ ਜਪਦਿਆਂ (ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ) ਭਰਮ ਭਟਕਣ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Chanting the Name of the Lord of the Universe, doubt and delusions are dispelled. ||1||
(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰਕ) ਡਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਡਰ ਡਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ, ਉਹ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ।
Then, he will not die of fear or anxiety, and he will never drown.
(ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਨਾਹ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Without the Fear of God, he drowns and dies, and loses his honor.
ਜੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਸਰੀਰ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ) ਲਿੱਸਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ) ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਲੋਭ ਦੀ ਰੁੱਤ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
In the Fear of God, the body becomes thin, and the blood of greed passes out of the body.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ (ਪਾਇਆਂ ਸੋਨਾ ਆਦਿਕ) ਧਾਤ ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
As fire purifies metal, so does the Fear of the Lord eradicate the filth of evil-mindedness.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ), ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਡਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ।
Meeting with the Guru, you shall know the Fear of God, and other fears shall be taken away.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਵੈਰਾਗ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਖੋਜ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Through the Fear of God, the attitude of detachment wells up, and one sets out in search of the Lord.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਡਰ ਅਦਬ ਹੈ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸਰਧਾ-ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
The Glorious Virtues of the Lord dwell in the heart of that person, whose inner being is filled with the Fear of God, and His Love.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ । ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਿਆ (ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਿਆ) ।
Without the Fear of God, His Love is not obtained. Without the Fear of God, no one is carried across to the other side.
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਆਪ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
He Himself creates the world, and He himself takes care of it.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਪਿੱਛੇ) ਭਟਕਣ (-ਰੂਪ ਬੰਧਨ) ਕੱਟਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Without the Fear of God, doubt is not dispelled, and love for the Name is not embraced.
ਇਸ ਡਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਉੱਚੀ) ਵੀਚਾਰ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ
Through the Fear of God, the terrifying world-ocean is crossed over, reflecting on the Guru's Teachings.
ਇਸ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਡਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਉਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ ।
Through the Fear of God, the Fearless Lord is found; He has no end or limitation.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਧਿਆਨ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਸੁਣੋ, ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਜੇ (ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਖਿੱਝ, ਸਹਿਮ, ਬੇ-ਰਹਿਮੀ ਆਦਿਕ ਕੋਈ) ਡਰ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਉਥੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ ।
Where the Fearless Lord is, there is no fear; where there is fear, the Lord is not there.
ਮੈਂ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ—ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਥੇ (ਦਾਝਨ, ਸੰਸਾ, ਕਠੋਰਤਾ ਆਦਿਕ) ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਤਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ।੧੮੦।
